Abstract
This study analyzes the citations of the Mencius found in the memorials to the throne submitted by Jo Heon (Jungbong, 1544–1592), a representative Confucian scholar of mid-Joseon, in order to elucidate how his intellectual orientation and Neo-Confucian praxis were intertwined. The mid-Joseon period was marked by intensified factional politics, external threats, and the looming crisis of the Imjin War. In this context, Jo Heon raised urgent appeals through his memorials, criticizing the abuses of power by corrupt officials, urging the sovereign’s cultivation in the Way of the Sage, calling for the opening of channels for remonstrance, and stressing the need for social relief, military reform, and decisive diplomacy. Notably, he cited passages from the Mencius nine times, thereby grounding his admonitions in Confucian orthodoxy. These citations reinforced his arguments in four main respects: the denunciation of political corruption, the exhortation of royal self-cultivation, the diagnosis of people’s livelihood problems, and the justification of military and diplomatic reforms. In this way, Jo Heon transformed the Confucian classics into the language of practical politics, adapting Neo-Confucian ideals as a logic of reform in response to national crisis. His employment of Mencius exemplifies the close integration of scholarship and politics, thought and practice, and provides an important clue to understanding his intellectual orientation.
