Abstract

「The Paris-Jangseo(巴里長書) : long petition to to Paris」 was written by Confucian scholars in Korea in 1919 and sent to the Paris Peace Conference, a lengthy text that informed the world of the legitimacy of Joseon's independence and the injustice of Japanese colonial politics. 「The Paris-Jangseo」 was written by Confucian scholars in Yeongnam (嶺南) and Hoseo (湖西) and signed by 137 people, and sending it to the Paris Peace Conference is a representative example of the anti-Japanese movement through literature. At that time, about 500 Confucian scholars and their families were arrested and detained by Japanese imperialists for the ‘The Paris-Jangseo Movement’. However, the ‘The Paris-Jangseo Movement’ was not known to the public and tried to disappear from history, which made Confucian scholars very sad for later. However, in 1973, a monument commemorating the ‘The Paris-Jangseo Movement’ was finally built at Jangchungdan Park(奬忠壇公園) in Seoul, and starting with this, monuments gradually began to be built in various regions across the country, and a total of 12 memorials were built as of 2025. This paper analyzes the current status and characteristics of the construction of 12 ‘The Monument for Paris-Jangseo’ and finds the modern significance of the monument. ‘The Paris-Jangseo’ was signed in 1919 and was built in an area related to Confucian scholars who suffered from hardships. In the region, the monument was erected in honor of these Confucian scholars as proud local figures and with the intention of inheriting the spirit of independence of their predecessors. The appearance of these monuments was initially made in the form of a typical monument, with the head of the monument placed on the body of the monument and a seated statue underneath it. However, depending on the location where the monument was erected, it was discovered that the monument could or could not function effectively as a monument. Built to honor the spirit of ‘The Paris-Jangseo Movement’ is a historical, educational, and cultural asset that goes beyond mere commemorative sculptures. As a place of memory, the monument serves as a medium to bring the spirit of the past to the present, and in particular, can be a symbolic space that shows the harmony between Confucian values and modern society. Therefore, it is necessary to properly manage the monument and utilize it in various ways for future generations.
