Abstract
The Korea Productivity Center and the Korea Competency Association Consulting, Korea's leading management consultancy, each use standardized survey methods to publish the National Customer Satisfaction Index (NCSI) and the Korean Industry's Brand Power Index (K-BPI), Korean Customer Satisfaction Index (KCSI) companies every year. The Three indexes, which are produced through extensive surveys of customers who have used corporate products and services directly, are reliable indexes to measure the reputation of customer satisfaction. Using these metrics, in this paper, we examine the impact of consumer perceptions and assessments of goods and services produced by the entity, i.e. customer reputation, on firm value. For this purpose, NCSI, K-BPI and KCSI, alternatives to customer reputation, are analyzed for companies listed in the KOSPI and KOSDAQ markets from 2007 to 2017. Firm values are measured with market value of Tobin’s Q, respectively, and the influence of customer reputation is examined through regression analysis, and the effects of cumulative abnormal returns (CARs) on short-term stock price performance are analyzed based on the date of the announcement of the award. Through this study, we can gauge the meaning and value of customer reputation as intangible asset in financial decision making process. The important empirical results of the study are summarized as follows. First, NCSI, K-BPI and KCSI awards have significant and positive effect on market value (Tobin’s Q). In addition, the analysis that changed the independent-subsidiary relationship between the award and the firm value, and the regression analysis of the relationship between the three-year consecutive awards, also present the structure in which the customer's reputation could play a virtuous role in the long-term and continuous increase in value of the entity by showing a positive correlation. The measurement of changes in stock prices before and after the date of the index's announcement indicate that the cumulative abnormal return (CAR) also has a positive effect.
