공매도와 신용거래는 미래 주가의 방향성에 대한 투자자들의 서로 상반된 예상을 반영한다. 본 연구는 공매도와 신용거래의 투자성과를 비교분석함으로써 이들 투자자들이 미래 주가 방향에 대해 어느 정도의 정보력을 보유하는지를 분석한다. 주요 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 신용거래량은 공매도거래량에 비하여 약 6배 높은 반면, 공매도거래 수익금이 신용거래 수익금보다 약 41배 큼을 발견하였다. 둘째, 공매도거래 비중과 공매도거래 수익금은 양(+)의 관계이나, 신용거래 비중과 신용거래 수익금은 음(-)의 관계임을 보고한다. 이는 공매도거래의 경우 투자자들의 정보력이 있으나, 신용거래는 그렇지 않음을 시사한다. 셋째, 공매도거래는 주가하락기에 더 큰 수익을 창출함을 발견하였다. 마지막으로, 신용거래자들은 상승기, 횡보기에는 정보력이 없으나, 하락기에 정보력이 있는 투자자들이 존재하여 수익을 획득함을 알수 있었다. 본 논문은 공매도 및 신용거래의 수익성을 동시에 연구한 처음 시도로 의미가 있다. 또한 상승기와 하락기 등 시장지수의 흐름에 따라 공매도와 신용거래의 투자성과가 상이한지 분석하고 그 투자성과를 결정하는 요인들을 분석함으로써 주가 예측에 바탕한 적극적 투자자들의 투자형태에 대한 시사점을 도출한다.
Abstract
Short-sale trades and margin trades reflect investors‘ opposite expectations on the direction of future stock prices. This paper attempts to simultaneously analyze the investment performance of short selling and margin trading. These two types of transactions are caused by active investors with different views on future market movement. This study examines whether short-sale and margin trades are caused by informed traders or not. The main findings are summarized as follows. First, we have found that the amount of margin trades are about six times higher than that of short-sale trades, while the profits from short-sale trades is approximately forty one times larger than that of margin trades. Second, short-sale profits get larger with short sale trades, while margin trades’ ratio and profits do not show significant co-relation with each other. Third, we have found that profits of short-sale traders are significant only in bear markets. Lastly, margin traders’ profits are pronounced especially in bear market, not in bull market.
