Abstract

The purpose of this study is to develop an evaluation index for selecting Taekwondo athletes. Specifically, in order to achieve the purpose of the study, the primary step was to set an evaluation variable and calculated the weight of each evaluation variable by considering the relative importance based on the selected evaluation variable. To achieve the aim of the study, 110 Taekwondo coaches were selected to rank the important factors for selecting athletes, and based on the results of the survey. We developed an evaluation weighted variable. An expanded Angoff method was applied to calculate the weight of the evaluation variables. The results of the study are as follows. First, the evaluation variables for the selection of athletes were divided into internal factors including personality, sincerity, life attitude, record, height, strength, and desire to win, external factors including the relationship with a coach, personality of a parent, and game operation style of athlete. Second, the importance of evaluation variables was ‘personality,’ ‘sincerity,’ ‘life attitude,’ ‘record,’ ‘height,’ ‘strength,’ ‘desire to win,’ ‘relationship with coach,’ ‘personality of parent,’ ‘game operation style of athlete.’ Third, the evaluation index of the athletes’ selection was Y = 2.58(character) + 2.29(sincerity) + 1.79(life attitude) + 1.79(winning career) + 1.76(height) + 1.57(physical fitness) + 1.52(competitive) + 1.40(relationship with the coach) + 1.36(parents’ character) + 1.00(ability to operate a competition). The results of the study are considered to be significant as one of the measures to address various issues such as corruption in college entrance and joining the semi-professional teams.
