Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effect of learned helplessness in the relationship between hope and intention of athlete dropout in kumdo athletes. The subjects were 241 elite high school students participating in the 59th National Kumdo Spring Competition in 2016. These subjects completed questionnaires to measure trait hope, learned helplessness, and intention of athlete dropout. SPSS 18.0, Amos 18.0 statistical program were used to analyze the collected data. The results showed that hope had a negative effect on intention of athlete dropout, but there was no statistical significance. In addition, hopes had a significant negative effect on the learned helplessness, and the learned helplessness had a positive effect on intention of athlete dropout. The learned helplessness was found to have a complete mediating effect in the relationship between hope and intention of athlete dropout. In other words, hope induced an indirect effect on the intention of athlete dropout through the learned helplessness. In conclusion, we supported the basic code of hope theory by confirming the leading role of hope in controlling the learned helplessness and intention of athlete dropout.
