Abstract

The purpose of this study is to confirm the elastic modulus of the muscles around the lumbar region by a non-invasive method when the spinal muscles are passively stretched in the prone position on a form roller. Thirteen male subjects who experienced martial arts in the past, participated in the study. Using ultrasound shear-wave elastography, the curvature of spine and the shear elastic modulus of the erector spinae and multifidus muscles were investigated. As a result, significant increase in the kyphosis of thoracic level(P<.001) and decrease in the lordosis of lumbar level(P<.001) were found in prone position on the form roller. Furthermore, the shear-wave elastography of erector spinae muscle(P<.001) was increased significantly in prone position on the form roller compared to in the one on the flat table. In conclusion, the results of study suggest that this increase in elasticity by passive stretching using a form roller becomes a effective method that could prepare the spinal muscles for preventing injury as well as enhancing the performance during training martial arts.
