Abstract
The purpose of this study was to find out the effects of passive and active stretching on low back pain due to contracture in iliopsoas muscle. This Study was conducted with total of 40 subjects made up of 20 male and 20 female patients who had low back pain. Patients were randomly divided into passive and active stretching exercise group with each group having 20 patients with 10 males and 10 females. The paired sample t-test was used to examine the stretching effect of iliopsoas muscle prior to and following treatment on each group by applying the respectable stretching exercises to passive and active stretching exercise group. As the result of application of passive stretching exercise, the shortening angle of iliopsoas muscle was significantly reduced after the treatment in comparison to that prior to treatment (p<0.001). The result of application of active stretching exercise also illustrated significant reduction in the shortening angle of iliopsoas muscle after the treatment in comparison to that prior to treatment (p<0.001). In addition, the reduction in the shortening angle of iliopsoas muscle in the active stretching exercise group was significantly more prominent than that in the passive stretching exercise group (p<0.01). Low back pain is also significantly decreased in the both exercise group(p<0.001). Therefore, the active stretching exercise for the iliopsoas muscle can be used during everyday of life to take care the back pain due to contracture of iliopsoas.
