Abstract

This study investigates the author's annotated manuscript of The Myth of Jilmajae (Iljisa, 1982, 7th edition), discovered in 2024 at the Midang Archive in Dongguk University Library. Among the 33 poems in Part I of the collection, 27 were found to have undergone extensive revisions. These authorial corrections can be categorized by form―punctuation additions, word substitutions or insertions, and the inclusion of Chinese characters―and reclassified by intention into three types: (1) correction of factual errors, (2) clarification of meaning, and (3) aesthetic refinement. The research confirms that this manuscript served as the base text for Silla Pungnyu, the Japanese-translated poetry collection published in 1986. The manuscript is believed to have been prepared between December 1982 and November 1986. In this revision process, Seo Jeong-ju (Midang) redefined the concept of “myth” through three criteria: spatially limited to Jilmajae, peopled by its inhabitants, and infused with holiness elements. His own autobiographical narrative was no exception to this mythicization. Through The Myth of Jilmajae, Midang sought to contemporize the past and seal human life within mythic time. The characters, imbued with a sense of the sacred, embody the primal aspects of life, suffering, and memory—intersecting with a poetic meditation on the return to one's origin, or homeland. Ultimately, the collection represents Midang's aesthetic struggle to recover the lost values of community in the face of industrialization―a mythic journey toward “the infinite and the eternal.” However, this study does not definitively conclude whether the annotated manuscript can serve as a foundational text for the establishment of a critical edition of Midang's poetry. Further research is required to resolve this question.
