Abstract
This study investigated pre-service teachers’ musical knowledge base before and after they were introduced to a music education course. The research topics focused on: (a) Pre-service teachers’ musical knowledge base and improvement, and (b) the relationship between musical knowledge and self-efficacy. One hundred ninety six pre-service teachers in early childhood or childhood education programs from an urban public university in the U.S. participated in the study. Surveys were distributed to participants in a music education course at the first and the last week of class. Results indicated that pre-service teachers do not have prior knowledge and their lack of knowledge is strongly correlated to their self-efficacy. However, prior knowledge was not correlated to their ability to gain new musical knowledge. After a semester of music education, pre-service teachers’ knowledge base as well as self-efficacy was significantly increased and no longer correlated to their prior knowledge.
