초록
Play has long been seen as an important component of early childhood education programs. Often how play is used in programs today relates to how play has been conceived in the past. Understanding how play has been viewed in history and how educators and psychologists view play today can provide an understanding about the nature of play. This article reviews the theories of play to provide an understanding of play as well as to justify young children’s play. Classical, modern theories, and contemporary theories are described to help understand the contemporary rhetoric on children’s play.
