초록

Studies on basic psychological needs (BPN) have previously been conducted on adults and adolescents. The purpose of this study was to measure Korean children’s BPN in a developmentally appropriate way and to determine the effects of mothers’ and grandparents’ parenting on children's BPN. The sample included 213 children (51.64% female) recruited from 4 kindergartens in Seoul. The analyses relied on structural equation modeling and bootstrapping procedures, and the results supported the model. In particular, the results show that needs related to competence and relatedness were high for Korean children, whereas needs for autonomy were lowest, even with the mother’s perceived high level of autonomy-supportive parenting. Grandparents’ autonomy-supportive parenting did not affect children’s BPN, whereas grandparents’ autonomy-control parenting had a negative effect on the children’s BPN through the mother’s autonomy-control parenting.
