Abstract
The purpose of this study was to analyze the characteristics of contemporary art which make community for the purpose of art education in action. I chose six contemporary art examples and analyzed them as community arts projects and community-based art. I categorized the characteristics of community based art projects and ultimately looked for its application for art education. The six community-based arts projects are socially-engaged art and site-specific art of Gwangju Biennale and Minjoong Art, activist artists Wochenklausur's and Susanne Lacy's dialogical art, and Nikki Lee's and Ik-Joong Kang's multicultural and collaborative art. Community arts projects is created by the artist who want to make socially-engaged art activity and enhance the cooperation, collaboration, and unification among many communities. As art education projects in action, community arts projects encourage participants to be aware of community and empathetic mutual understandings of others. The purpose of community arts projects is similar to the purpose of art education projects that empower the audience which has been deprived of the right for expressions and help understand postmodern conceptual art for art for life's sake. Ultimately, community arts projects and art education teach participants to be global citizens and integrate social justice, unification, and well-being for individual and others.
