Abstract
This study looks at methods in the educational application of R-rated films and rate/age discrep- ancy films. It is by no means a protectionist view that children and adolescents should be protected from simply watching such movies. Besides, film textbooks used in high school classroom deal with R-rated films, and teachers and students encounter R-rated films or rate/age-discrepancy films in- discriminately without recognition of rate classification. This situation is repeated at schools, and no one is concerned about the seriousness of the problem. Under the pretext of education, both R-rated films and rate/age discrepancy films will not go beyond the legal boundaries. We begin our study with deep doubts about whether these films can be used as educational films in the classrooms. School screenings of R-rated or age-discrepancy films may not be as difficult as we might think. It is only way to get permission from parents in advance. However, there will not be many teachers who will go through these complicated courses. Currently, elementary and secondary schools require pa- rents' permission in advance when conducting field trips outside the classroom. Also, if permission from parents is required, they are frequently agreed through home correspondence. This process of consent from parents is absolutely necessary in film classes. However, most schools in South Korea do not have specific guidelines for this. In conclusion, we should reduce the reckless screening and introduction of R-rated and age-dis- crepancy films at schools and examine the possibilities of these films as educational films in a more institutionalized environment. This study aims to prepare a refined system for the educational use of these films inevitably used rather than the intention to limit the educational use of R-rated films and rate/age discrepancy films. It is needed to discuss on these films sufficiently in the near future.
