Abstract
The purpose of this study is to develop a curricular prototype for a college level music appreciation course that reconciles the traditional aesthetic education with the need for greater multiculturalism. The curricular prototype is based on the functions of music in society rather than the Western European historical approach. It consists of six units, which are ‘music and spirituality’, ‘music and entertainment’, ‘music and movement’, ‘music and the intellect’, ‘music and politics’, and ‘music as emotional expression.’Each of units have multiple musical genres, which include multicultural music, popular music, Korean traditional music as well as western classical music. The Instructional frame places particular emphasis on the learner-centered approach of problem-based learning. It is divided into three section: ‘Looking ahead’, ‘Knowledge assembly’, and ‘Synthesis and reflection’. In the section ‘looking ahead’, students assess their interest in the topic and the learning activities are outlined. In the section ‘knowledge assembly’, students are given collaborative activities designed to help them gauge what they already know and formulate questions about what they need to know. In the last section ‘synthesis and reflection’, students construct their own understanding and present knowledge. This type of curricular design is expected to address the cultural diversity of today’s society and also shows students that music exists in a continuum of music enjoyed in real life rather than in an academic environment.
