Abstract
This study aims to explore how generative AI and prompt literacy can be applied in arts education, particularly in a traditional Korean music class. Korean music lessons have often been conducted in a performance-oriented and teacher-centered manner, which limits opportunities for learners’ self-directed inquiry and creative expression. In response, this study highlights prompt literacy as a potential alternative strategy. As a case study, a graduate-level course titled Creating a Digital Guidebook for Korean Traditional Instruments, offered in the second semester of 2023 at University A, was analyzed. In this class, students designed their own prompts, generated text and image content using generative AI tools such as Wrtn and MagicMedia, and integrated the outputs into digital mate rials through the Book Creator platform. The analysis showed that variations in prompt design led to differences in the content and ex pressive quality of the outputs. Through iterative requests and revisions, learners demonstrated self-directedness, creativity, and digital literacy. At the same time, some students struggled to crit ically assess AI-generated outputs or to refine prompts effectively. These results suggest that prompt literacy functions as a key component in leveraging generative AI for arts education, while also un derscoring the need for systematic instruction in prompt design and evaluation strategies. As an exploratory study based on a single classroom case, this research sheds light on the practical potential of prompt literacy in generative AI-based arts education and provides foundational insights for the design of future AI-integrated instructional models.
