Abstract
This study examines the fifty-year cinematic trajectory of American experimental filmmaker Ernie Gehr through the lens of media evolution, tracing his shift from 16mm film to digital video. It argues that this transition is not merely technological but constitutes a phenomenological and aesthetic re configuration of the relationship between perception and medium. Through formal analysis and phe nomenological interpretation, the study engages with key works from both periods—Serene Velocity (1970), Side/Walk/Shuttle (1991), Autumn (2017), Apropos Essex Street Market (2018), and Circling Essex Crossing (2018). The analysis reveals a continuity in Gehr’s artistic inquiry: his early exploration of light and film emulsion evolves into digital experiments with perceptual transition, enabled by mobile cameras and expanded post-production techniques. The shift from in-camera editing to digital montage in troduced new formal strategies—layering, looping, and temporal modulation—that reframe the experi ence of urban space. Rather than a rupture, this transformation reflects an ongoing dialectical en gagement with the material and historical conditions of cinema. Ultimately, Gehr’s digital works articulate the unstable ontology of contemporary urban existence while extending the phenomenology of vision that grounds his earlier films. This study positions his digital aesthetics as a pivotal contribution to rethinking the continuity of structural film within the context of contemporary experimental cinema and media philosophy.
