Abstract
This study adopts Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) as its theoretical and methodological framework to examine how the visual composition and narrative structure of Pedro Almodóvar’s films intersect with sociocultural discourses in shaping characters’ sexual subjectivities and gender identities. Focusing on three analytical axes—(1) the reversal of sexual revenge and pleasure, (2) the awakening of female desire through sadomasochism, and (3) voyeuristic gaze and the ethics of sensation—this research explores the modes of representation and operation of sexual imagery in Almodóvar’s cine- matic language. In addition, the study investigates how Almodóvar’s use of symbolic color schemes and his distinc- tive audiovisual aesthetics function not merely as visual stimuli but as critical strategies that articulate the political and ethical dimensions of queer cinema. Through this lens, sexual imagery in his work emerges not as a static representation but as a dynamic articulation of the ethics of desire and be- coming, interwoven with visual-sensory structures and interactive narrative forms. By recontextualizing Almodóvar’s politics of sexuality and cinematic representation, this study of- fers a critical reappraisal of his aesthetic universe. It particularly focuses on his debut feature, Pepi, Luci, Bom y otras chicas del montón (1980), to reveal how the cultural resistance and subversive aes- thetics shaped by the post-Franco Movida Madrileña movement are embedded in the film’s visual and narrative fabric. Ultimately, this research aims to provide an academic contribution to understanding Almodóvar’s unique artistic vision through the lens of sexual imagery and sociopolitical resistance.
