Abstract

In order to help students' creativity emerge, there is a need to develop a concept of creativity different from Big-C. Through the review of related theories, it is found that the creativity researchers have payed attention to the externalization only. However, we have to pay more attention to the creativity emerges in the internalization process of teaching and learning. Therefore, 'student creativity' is defined as "a new discovery or interpretation which is meaningful to a student in the process of internalization and an application (or a production) to a new situation in the process of externalization of learning". Based on the above concept, a teaching-learning model nurturing student creativity is suggested as the following: In the beginning stage, the teacher provides familiar materials in various forms and lets students to discover the theme or topic of the lesson by imagining and/or inferring. In the developing stage, the teacher provides opportunities to explore a new knowledge and lets students to internalize the knowledge by metaphoric thinking and/or inferring. In the closing stage, the teacher provides a new situation(s) and lets students to solve a problem(s) and/or produce a new product(s) by applying the internalized knowledge. Also, the followings are suggested as supporting factors in all of the three stages: 1) real life contexts, 2) interests and curiosity of students, 3) permissive atmosphere, 4) interactions between teacher-students and student-student, 5) positive feedback.
