초록

This study examined the effect of consistence of a debater's initial position and assigned position to defend in an open online debate on debates' opinion change. An experiment with 24 adult learners was carried to answer the research question. Participants engaged in 3 sessions of open online debate after they were randomly assigned either to consistent condition or inconsistent condition. Each debate group was of 4 participants resulting 6 debate groups in total. The debate topic was 'capital punishment in Korea'. The dependent variable was the magnitude of debaters' opinion change toward assigned position after debate. The results show that debaters' directional shift toward the position that they were assigned to defend in the debate also occurs in open online debate. The practical implications of this study and possible future studies were suggested.
