Abstract
The present study aimed to examine a moderating effect of non-limited theories about willpower in academic contexts on mediation of academic self-regulation between academic self-efficacy and emotional exhaustion of college students. An online survey was administered to college students, and a total of 337 responses were analyzed. The results showed that the mediating role of academic self-regulation in the relation between academic self-efficacy and emotional exhaustion was significantly moderated by students’ non-limited theories about willpower in academic contexts. There was a significant interaction effect of academic self-regulation and non-limited theories about willpower on emotional exhaustion. Specifically, for students with a non-limited theory about willpower in academic contexts, the higher academic self-regulation they exhibited, the lower emotional exhaustion they experienced. On the contrary, for those with a relatively limited theory about willpower in academic contexts, the higher academic self-regulation they exhibited, the higher emotional exhaustion they experienced. Based on these findings, implications and limitations of the study were discussed and future research directions were suggested.
