Abstract

This study aims to examine the effects of scenario cycle and teacher individual factors on emotional engagement in a teaching simulation. A total of forty teachers, including twenty pre-service teachers and twenty in-service teachers, participated in this study. Participants interacted with a student avatar showing disruptive behavior through a teaching simulation. The student avatar presented progressively high-intensity disruptive behavior according to the five phases of the scenario cycle. Participants' facial expressions were recorded during the experiment and analyzed as emotional values through iMotions' AFFDEX software. In this paper, a three-way repeated-measures ANOVA was performed. The independent variables consisted of the teachers' teaching experience, gender, and the scenario cycle. The dependent variable was emotional engagement, including three sub-factors, engagement, attention, and valence. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. First, in-service teachers perceived significantly higher engagement and positive valence than pre-service teachers. Second, there was an interaction effect between the teaching experiment and gender at the attention level. Third, gender and scenario cycle effects were not significant on participants' emotional engagement.
