Abstract

This study aims to suggest solutions to the climate crisis facing humanity from a Buddhist perspective. In Buddhism, the cause of the suffering of the climate crisis is the Three poison of Tamjinchi (貪瞋痴), which can be solved by practicing the Three studies of gyejeonghye (戒定慧). The ethics, values, and practices of dependent origination through this can be an alternative for solving today’s environmental problems. If we were to diagnose the climate crisis and come up with solutions not only in Buddhism but also in other religions, politics, ideology, science, and philosophy, they would not be much different from Buddhism. The problem is the significant difference between this knowledge and actual life. ‘Human greed’, ‘competition and conflict’, ‘ignorance that forgets that the world is one life with me’, and ‘foolishness that the world’s resources are infinite’, the Three poisons are habits that are difficult to escape for humans who are already addicted to the industrial economic system of the capitalist system. In order to overcome this climate crisis, Buddhists must take the lead. We must change ignorance and wrong perceptions about the Buddhist ecological environment and instill proper ecological living habits through ‘environmental education Buddhist work’, and as the Buddha declared evangelism for the benefit and happiness of many people, we must move forward as an active social movement of Buddhists. Above all, in order to narrow the gap between knowledge and life, we need small habits in our daily lives that make my mind and body one with the world. I believe that if we practice even just one thing, such as ‘purifying my mind through practice’ and ‘saving things around my life’ once a day, the environment will change. The climate crisis is a long-term environmental issue that requires us to look far into the future. Even if the results of our efforts do not appear right away, we must continuously make efforts with a mature attitude and wisdom.
