Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between mindfulness and emotional intelligence among college students, to reveal the structural relationship between mindfulness, self-compassion and emotional intelligence, and to verify whether self-compassion mediates the process of mindfulness or affects emotional intelligence. This study was conducted with the voluntary participants of 245 college students and based on the idea that self-compassion works as parameter in the relationship between mindfulness and emotional intelligence. To evaluate the suitability of this study, the partial mediation was set up as competition model. The result was that mindfulness had a positive effect on self-compassion, and the outcome of the previous study that self-compassion is a core element of mindfulness had been supported. Furthermore, self-compassion has a positive effect on emotional intelligence, and a complete mediation effect in the relationship between mindfulness and emotional intelligence. This means that self-compassion is an intensifying factor in the relationship between mindfulness and emotional intelligence. This study is meaningful in that it explains positively the process of mindfulness in the growth of emotional intelligence and suggests specific methods for developing emotional intelligence. In addition, this study shows the possibility of developing a program based on these processes that improve the effects related with three factors-mindfulness, self-compassion, and emotional intelligence-at the same time.
