Abstract
The Trisvabhāva (TS) consists of 38 verses, all of which focuses on the three natures. The TS dedicates all 38 verses to explaining them in detail. This text is noteworthy thanks to its in-depth explanations of the three natures, which have helped to achieve great insights. This paper aims to examine the definition and the characteristics of the three natures in the TS, as well as to study their structure as it appears in the text. In verses 1-3 and 10-21 of the TS the definition and characteristics of the three natures are specifically mentioned. They are defined as a profound object of knowledge for the wise. It is further shown that the three natures are not different from the perspectives of being and non-being, duality and unity, impurity and purity insofar as there is no difference between the seemingly opposing characteristics. Based on the theory of no difference (不異性), the three natures are characterized by its profoundness. According to Alan Sponberg the theory of the three natures is divided into two main parts, a pivotal structure and a progressive structure. The structure of the three natures in the TS corresponds to the progressive model under three conditions: First, it distinguishes between conventional (世俗) and ultimate (勝義) reality, second, regarding ultimate reality, only consummate nature (圓成實性) is accepted, and third, in the process of practice, the three natures develop in a step by step sequence. However, the structure of the three natures in the TS must be considered along with the characteristics of the three natures’. This is because what the structure of the three natures in the TS explains is that the practitioner can only reach vijñaptimātratā through progressive practice of realizing that the three natures are not different.
