Abstract

The verses 26-30 in Trisvabhāvanirdeśa (TSN) reveal main characteristics of the three natures which is non-duality (advaya) and refer to the parijñā, prahāṇa, and prāpti as a pratice to realize it. However, it is difficult to understand what each of the objects of the three process points to among three natures only with TSN's verses. In Tattva-pariccheda, the third chapter of Madhyāntavibhāga-bhāṣya, the description on the practice of three natures which is not understood by TSN's verses alone, is clearly revealed. The three natures have the meaning for each of the four truths: suffering, the origin of suffering, the cessation of suffering, and the way to release from suffering. Especially, in relation to the fourth, it is stated that the thusness (眞如) is attained by the parijñā, prahāṇa, and prāpti. TSN verses 26-30 reveal that the three natures are characterized by advaya through the simile of magic show. This simile shows two different perspectives, the un-enlightened's and the enlightened's, by focusing on the nature of advaya, and describes what the thusness is. In the verses 31-34, it refers to parijñā, prahāṇa, and prāpti as the process of practicing the nature of advaya. Here, the objects of parijñā are all three, but the object of prahāṇa is the Dependent, and the object of prāpti is only the Absolute. The simile of magic show describes in detail the process of this practice and the moment of attaining the thusness. parijñā of the Imaginary is non-recognizing of elephants. parijñā of the Dependent is knowing that what is appeared as an elephant is not real. prahāṇa of the Dependent is stopping the magic spell. parijñā of the Absolute is knowing that the elephant's appearance disappears but the piece of wood do not disappear. prāpti of the Absolute is achieving the thusness, the piece of wood, by recognizing the absence of an elephant.
