자리이타 관점에서 본 샨띠데바와 피터싱어의 윤리적 입장

본 논문의 목적은 샨띠데바(Śāntideva)의 논서에 나타난 중도적 이타주의개념과, 현대 응용윤리학자 피터 싱어(Peter Singer)의 효율적 이타주의 이론을 고찰하고, 두 이론의 비교를 통하여 대승윤리의 이타주의에 나타난 특징을 밝히는 것이다. 샨띠데바의 『입보리행론』은 불교의 지혜‧자비에 대한대승윤리로서 보리심에 기반한 자리이타의 중요성을 강조한다. 즉 샨띠데바의 논서는 대승의 방편 교설인 지혜와 자비의 실천윤리를 게송으로 전하며, 중관철학의 중도적 이타주의를 표방한다. 『입보리행론』에 나타난 이타주의의특성은 이 시대의 감정적 소통과 공감적 이해를 확대할 수 있는 보살의 실천윤리로 지향된다. 높은 수행 단계에 도달한 보살의 윤리적 실천은 자리와 이타의 구분이 해체되어, 자리가 곧 이타이고 이타가 곧 자리가 되는 무애행으로 이어지는 것이다. 반면 실천윤리학을 역설하는 피터 싱어는 우리가 이기적인 성향에서 벗어날 방법을 윤리라고 여기고, 선호 공리주의로써 효율적이타주의를 역설한다. 피터 싱어는 효율적 이타주의를 통해서 우리 삶이 ‘선의 최대화’를 목표로 적극적으로 이타행을 실천하는 ‘윤리적인 삶’으로 바뀌길 기대하는 것이다. 본 논문은 샨띠데바 중관철학의 형이상학적 근거를 토대로 우리가 이타주의를 실천해야만 하는 당위성을 고찰하고, 대승윤리의 자리이타 개념을 널리 알리고자 한다.
Abstract
This paper examines the concept of moderate altruism in Śāntideva’s treaties and the concept of effective altruism in Peter Singer’s theory. Through the comparison of these two concepts, the characteristics of Mahayana ethics altruism could be identified. Śāntideva’s Bodhisattva- caryāvatāra emphasizes the importance of benefiting both oneslf and others, based on Bodhicitta. Śāntideva’s treatise conveys the practical ethics of Mahayana Buddhism’s wisdom and altruism, especially on the grounds of Madhyamaka philosophy. The characteristics of altruism shown in Bodhisattva-caryāvatāra are oriented towards the practical ethics of Bodhisattva that can expand emotional communication and empathetic understanding of this era. The ethical practice of bodhisattva that has reached a high level of performance is to complete the level of genuine mutual benefit as the distinction between mutual interests is eliminated. On the other hand, Peter Singer, practical ethicist, considers ethics to be the way we could free ourselves from selfish tendencies. He also asserts effective altruism as a preference utilitarianism. In other words, effective altruism could transform our lives into ethical lives, maximizing the good. This thesis examines the necessity of practicing altruism based on the metaphysical grounds of Śāntideva’s central philosophy, I would like to widely publicize publicize the Mahayana ethics, benefiting both oneself and others. This paper is expected to clarify the necessity of practicing altruism, which Śāntideva’s describes.
