Abstract
In modern society, there is significant interest in effective altruism (EA). While EA has attracted attention for its positive aspects, such as contributing to the resolution of social issues like absolute poverty, it has also been criticized for its negative aspects, such as the involvement of an EA supporter in a financial fraud case. Consequently, there is considerable debate about EA’s academic standing. If EA is an ethical theory, then it should be possible to evaluate and address the issues arising from certain EA movements. Otherwise, EA must be established with the help of its relationship to other ethical theories. Therefore, the discussion regarding EA’s academic standing needs to be clarified for the sake of its long-term practice. Peter Singer, a prominent contemporary utilitarian, has published writings related to EA and, for this reason, some people have often equated it with utilitarianism. However, EA is grounded in non-consequentialism as well as utilitarian consequentialism, and it sometimes offers responses to criticisms raised against utilitarianism that differentiate the two. Consequently, there is considerable debate about what EA’s academic status truly is, especially in its relationship with utilitarianism. This paper clarifies that EA is a social movement operating at the individual tier of ethics—a motivational strategy—rather than at the theoretical tier of ethics, such as utilitarianism. This difference in the tier of ethics enables EA to draw upon various ethical theories while offering the same practical approach. Furthermore, this paper argues that, in order to avoid devolving into unethical behavior or relativism, EA must receive a theoretical foundation from the theoretical tier of ethics and be provided with a reasonable pluralistic framework from the institutional tier of ethics. Only then can EA fulfill its purpose of ethics realizing.
