Abstract
When we hear the word ‘cow’ (go, 牛), we can think of an individual cow or a group of cows. The orthodox Brahman’s schools in India holds the position that cows can be accurately referred to by the universal (characteristics) that cows possess. In other words, they hold the position that cows, which are external entities, can be directly recognized as objects of word (śabdārtha), while the Buddhist Pramāṇa’s tradition does not recognize individual cows as objects or meanings of word (śabdārtha), and considers them to be mere fiction or imaginary realms of reasoning (concepts, anumana). In the Pramāṇasamuccaya(vṛtti) (hereinafter PS(V)), Chapter 5, kk. 1-12, Digna proved that universal words cannot be carried by ① individual, ② universal, ③ relationship with universal, and ④ tadvat. Therefore, he excluded all four possibilities (alternatives) that could be assumed and led to the conclusion that words can only be expressed through “the exclusion of others”. This is similar to what modern Western philosopher Deleuze calls “the bankruptcy of reproduction, or Simulacres.” Dignāga argued that all universal identity is nothing more than an imitation. Therefore, the universality of ‘cow’ in non-Buddhist schools is nothing more than the world of Simulacres that reproduces the similarity of ‘cow’. On the other hand, Naiyāyika and Vaiśeṣika, which recognize the universality of ‘existence’, say that any individual can be referred to, but in the future Śaka king, rabbit horn, and turtle fur, we have no choice but to fall into the contradiction of deviation. Therefore, Dignāga denied the reality of the universal due to the infinite number of existing individuals and the resulting deviation (vyabhicāra).
