한글 창제 이후 간행된 한글 진언집과 불교 의례서에 수록된 진언들 중에는 한국불교에서만 통용된 특수한 진언들이 적지 않다. 그러나 이 같은 한국불교 특유의 진언들은 그다지 인지되어 있지 않다. 본 논문은 한국불교 특유의 진언들 13개를 선별하여 이것들의 개발 방식을 네 가지로 분류하여 고찰한다. 첫째, 신조어 진언은 범어의 음역이 아니라 한자의 조어를 진언의 내용으로 구사한다. 예컨대 무병수진언에서는 정체혜체(定體醯體), 불삼신진언에서는 호철모니(呼徹牟尼), 등의 조어를 구사한다. 둘째, 조합형은 진언들의 일부를 조합함으로써 별개의 진언이 된 것들이다. 이 진언들은 예컨대 정형구로 빈번하게 사용되는 “나모 사만다 못다남”(namaḥ samanta-buddhānā)에 다른 진언의 일부 구절을 추가하는 방식으로 조성되어 있다. 셋째, 발췌형 진언은 기존의 진언에서 일부를 발췌하거나 연결하여 별개의 진언으로 분리한 것들이다. 예컨대 생반진언은 다른 진언들에서 흔히 사용되는 옴(oṃ), 시리(śrī), 사바하(svāhā)를 연결한다. 넷째, 교체‧추가형 진언은 기존의 진언들 용어를 일부를 교체나 추가하여 새로운 명칭을 부여한 것들이다. 예컨대 삼십이상진언은 대비삼마지진언의 사바라(sphara)만을 사바하(svāhā)로 교체했다. 한국불교에서는 의례의 용도에 적합한 새로운 명칭의 진언을 계발하면서 기존의 진언들을 충분히 섭렵하여 응용했다. 진언의 개발 방식 중에서 특히 범어의 음역이 아닌 한자로 신조어를 구사하여 개발한 진언은 한국불교의 독창성을 대변하는 것으로 특기할 만하다.
Abstract
Since the born of Hangul, there are many special mantras that have exclusively been employed within Korean mantras and Buddhist ritual literatures. However, there has been a dearth of research on these unique Korean Buddhist mantras in academic Buddhist scholarship. Therefore, this paper selects 13 mantras that are unique to Korean Buddhism and examines their development in four ways : neologism, combination, excerpt, and replacement/addition. First of all, neologistic mantras are not transliterations of Sanskrit, but use Chinese characters as the content of mantras. Second, combinatorial mantras are mantras that have been created by combining parts of other mantras.These mantras are composed, for example, by adding some phrases from other mantras to "namaḥ samanta-buddhānā," which is frequently used as a formal phrase. Third, excerpted mantras are mantras that are taken from existing mantras that are already in common use and rearranged into separate and concise mantras by excerpting or linking parts of them. Fourth, the replacement/additional mantras are mantras that are given new names by replacing or adding terms to some of the existing mantras. Through this research, it can be seen that Korean Buddhism has developed new names for mantras suitable for ritual use, while also adapting existing mantras. Among the methods of mantra development, the mantras created by using neologisms in Chinese characters rather than transliterations of Sanskrit are particularly noteworthy as representing the originality of Korean Buddhism.
