Abstract
This paper examines the historical development of the doctrine of the Two Truths (二諦說) from Early Buddhism to Nāgārjuna’s Mūlamadhyamakakārikā, highlighting its philosophical significance in relation to language, truth, cognition, and liberation. While Early Buddhism does not explicitly distinguish between conventional and ultimate truths, a dual structure implicitly operates through the contrast between nirvāṇa and conditioned phenomena, as well as through the tension between linguistic expression and existential intuition. The Abhidharma schools systematized this structure within a substantialist metaphysics, identifying conventional truth with linguistic constructs and ultimate truth with intrinsic reality. Language was thus regarded as a reliable means of conveying truth, and an epistemology developed that sought ultimate insight through refined conceptual analysis. In contrast, the Prajñāpāramitā scriptures critically dismantle this realist framework, undermining both the notion of intrinsic nature (svabhāva) and the trust in language itself. These texts argue that language cannot convey ultimate truth and propose a reinterpretation of the Two Truths centered on emptiness (śūnyatā) and skillful means (upāya). Building on this critique, Nāgārjuna inherits and systematizes these insights in the Mūlamadhyamakakārikā, articulating the dependent and empty nature of all phenomena and establishing the interdependence of conventional and ultimate truths. While language cannot directly express truth, it can serve a pragmatic, soteriological role within the conditioned world. By interlinking dependent origination, emptiness, nominal designation, and the Middle Way, Nāgārjuna transforms the Two Truths from a doctrinal dichotomy into a dynamic framework for reflecting on language and reality, cognition and practice. This philosophical model laid the foundation for later developments in Madhyamaka thought by Bhāviveka and Candrakīrti, ultimately demonstrating the doctrine’s pivotal role in Buddhism’s linguistic and philosophical turn.
