Abstract
This paper examines how the core concept of “the Middle Way” (madhyamā pratipad) in Buddhist philosophy has developed and transformed from Early Buddhism through the Sarvāstivāda school of Abhidharma and the Prajñāpāramitā sūtras, culminating in Nāgārjuna’s Mūlamadhyamakakārikā (MMK). By tracing the historical development of this concept and analytically comparing the interpretative variations and semantic transformations that emerged throughout this trajectory, the study seeks to clarify its evolving significance. In Early Buddhism, the Middle Way was presented as an ethical path—namely, the Eightfold Path—transcending hedonism and asceticism (the “middle way between indulgence and self-mortification”), while on the ontological level, it appeared in forms such as neither existence nor non-existence, neither eternalism nor annihilationism, neither self-agency nor other-agency, and the middle between one and many. These were all closely tied to the doctrine of dependent origination (pratītyasamutpāda). The Sarvāstivāda school, from its realist standpoint of “all dharmas exist in the three times” (trisvabhāva-satya) and “permanent essence of dharmas” (dharmas have eternal substance), interpreted the Middle Way in a more restricted manner, emphasizing only the form of avoiding the extremes of eternalism and annihilationism. In contrast, the Prajñāpāramitā sūtras criticized this realist interpretation and deepened the philosophical meaning of the Middle Way by uniting the eightfold negations (aṣṭa-abhāvāḥ) with the doctrine of emptiness (śūnyatā). Within this broader development, Nāgārjuna, through his MMK, articulates the foundational equation “dependent origination = emptiness = the Middle Way,” thereby effecting a profound ontological shift in the understanding of the Middle Way. This paper argues that Nāgārjuna’s concept of the Middle Way inherits traditional interpretations while also critically transforming them, establishing it as the central philosophical principle of Mahāyāna Buddhism.
