Abstract
This study is based on the premise that the cognitive, social, psychological, and learning difficulties experienced by children and adolescents with borderline intellectual functioning stem from limitations associated with cognitive ability (IQ), which can also negatively affect their school life and social adjustment. Therefore, support for children and adolescents with borderline intellectual functioning should not be limited to enhancing cognitive abilities alone; rather, attention should be directed toward the potential to supplement and overcome these cognitive limitations through the development of non-cognitive abilities. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to implement a counseling program designed to enhance the non-cognitive traits of hope, growth mindset, and grit in children and adolescents with borderline intellectual functioning, and to evaluate the effectiveness of the program. To verify its effectiveness, a quasi-experimental design with a pretest–posttest control group was employed, and six children and adolescents with borderline intellectual functioning were non-randomly assigned to each of the experimental and control groups. The counseling program, consisting of counseling sessions and activity-based components, was designed to promote the non-cognitive abilities of hope, growth mindset, and grit, and was conducted over a total of 10 sessions. Data were analyzed using SPSS Win. Ver. 25.0, and the statistical techniques applied included descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). The results demonstrated that the counseling program for enhancing non-cognitive abilities was effective in improving hope, growth mindset, and grit among children and adolescents with borderline intellectual functioning. Based on these findings, recommendations were provided for promoting non-cognitive abilities in children and adolescents with borderline intellectual functioning.
