Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effect of self-esteem and the moderated mediating effect of ego-resilience in the relationship between academic stress and depression among adolescents. To analyze this research question, data from the 14th wave of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS) were utilized, and 1,348 adolescents who responded to the 14th wave survey were selected as the subjects of this study. Reliability analysis, descriptive statistics, frequency analysis, and correlation analysis were conducted using SPSS Win 24.0 version. In addition, the mediating and moderated mediating effects were analyzed using SPSS PROCESS Macro version 4.2. Through model 4, the mediating effect of self-esteem on the effect of academic stress on depression was analyzed. while Model 14 was used to test whether ego-resilience moderated the pathway between self-esteem and depression. First, academic stress and depression were low, while self-esteem and self-resilience were high.. Second, the mediating effect of self-esteem in the relationship between academic stress and depression was verified. Adolescents' academic stress had a negative effect on their self-esteem, and self-esteem had a negative effect on depression. In other words, the higher the academic stress, the lower the self-esteem, and this lower self-esteem increased depression. Third, resilience moderated the mediating effect of self-esteem in the relationship between academic stress and depression. Adolescents' resilience buffered the negative effect of academic stress on depression through self-esteem.
