본고는 2차대전 이후 시기인 1945년부터 1956년까지 영국영화(사)의 경향성을 총체적으로 탐구한다. 2차대전의 이후 영국영화의 산업적 환경과 영화적 경향은 노동당과 보수당의 집권, 미국 중심의 세계 질서 재편과 ‘제국’으로서의 위상 상실, 진보적 가치와 보수적 가치가 교차하던 동시기 영국 사회의 대내외적 흐름 속에서 전개되었다. 이러한 흐름 속에서, 이 시기 영국영화는 이 시기 영국을 둘러싼 대내외적 상황과 그로 인한 시대적 분위기를 다양한 갈래의 영화를 통해 투영하였다. 전쟁 경험과 기억을 직접적으로 재현한 영화들과 전쟁 이후 사회적 현실에 토대한 필름느와르 및 범죄 영화들은 이 시기 국가 정체성을 제고하던 영국 사회의 보수적 분위기와 지정학적 위상 변화가 반영된 것들이었다. 뿐만 아니라, 셰익스피어와 찰스 디킨스로 대표되는 고전적 문학 텍스트와 고딕 전통에 토대를 둔 문화적 전통의 영화들은 할리우드 영화와는 차별화된 영국적 색채를 표방한 가운데 전쟁 이후 영국 사회의 분위기와도 연관성을 갖는 것들이었다. 또한 일링 스튜디오(Ealing Studios)의 영화들로 대표되는 코미디 영화들은 영국적 현실과 가치체계를 풍자하였다. 그러면서 이 시기의 영국영화는 대외적으로 국제영화제를 비롯한 영미권 해외 관객들로부터 주목받게 된 것은 물론 영화사적 흐름에 있어서도 연속성과 단절을 띤 시기에 속해있었다고 할 수 있다.
Abstract
This paper comprehensively explores the trends in British film history from 1945 to 1956, the period after World War II. After World War II, the industrial environment and cinematic trends of British cinema were developed in the internal and external trends of British society, with labor and conservative governance, the reorganization of the U.S.-centered world order and the loss of status as an empire. In this trend, British films during this period projected the internal and external situations surrounding England during this period and the resulting atmosphere of the times through various branches of films. Films directly recreating war experiences and memories, and film noir and spiv films based on social realities after the war reflected the conservative atmosphere and geopolitical status changes in British society, which enhanced national identity during this period. In addition, classic literary texts represented by Shakespeare and Charles Dickens, and films of cultural traditions based on Gothic traditions, were associated with the atmosphere of post-war British society, with a distinctive British color from Hollywood films. Comedy films represented by Ealing Studios also satirized the British reality and value system. At the same time, it was revealed that British films during this period attracted attention from overseas audiences in the British and American regions, including the International Film Festival, as well as continuity and disconnection in the historical trend of film history.
