Abstract
This paper examines the formation and reorganization of the topography of Korean pop culture centered on films during the Korean War, and examines the historical process through which films have moved to the center of popular culture and what cultural meaning, status, and role they have established. The Korean War was a period when movies were able to maintain their roles and functions as box office entertainment and popular culture of the evacuation city population, along with mass media functions that rapidly spread the money shortage despite the human and material movement and destruction caused by the war. Urbanization, which was newly developed around the temporary capital Busan and Daegu, was able to quickly establish itself as a popular culture by attracting evacuees to movie audiences, and the media characteristics of movies were popularized, and the changes in the social atmosphere that emerged when the existing social order that had dominated Korean society was dismantled and collapsed. The Korean War is also significant in that it laid the foundation for the development of popular culture that would appear in earnest afterwards. It was possible to achieve not only the human and material foundation represented by the formation of popular culture, film manpower, and box office business established during the Korean War, but also the conditions for the media characteristics of movies coupled with the growth of the public accumulated from this period. In the end, it can be said that the film formation process into popular culture during the Korean War occupied its cultural position in the newly reorganized relationship between Korean society and the public.
