Abstract

In recent years, cinema has increasingly attempted to reframe nonhuman beings not as objects but as subjects, thereby challenging the human-centered worldview. This tendency reflects shifting paradigms in contemporary philosophical discourse, including posthumanism, animal ethics, and nonhuman agency. Jerzy Skolimowski's EO(2022) exemplifies this cinematic endeavor by granting subjectivity to a nonhuman protagonist-namely, a donkey. The film begins as an homage to Robert Bresson's Au Hasard Balthazar(1966), yet diverges through its distinct ethical stance. While Bresson's donkey symbolized silence and passivity, Skolimowski's EO acquires emotional and aesthetic agency, representing a fundamentally different ethical orientation. This inevitably leads to divergent aesthetic decisions, and this paper aims to examine the specific strategies employed to construct EO's subjectivity.
