본 연구는 빔 벤더스(Wim Wenders) 감독의 <퍼펙트 데이즈(Perfect Days)>(2023)를 분석 대상으로 선정하여, 영화 속 주된 시각 이미지를 구성하는 공간 이미지와 사물 이미지의 물질성과 의미작용을 탐색한다. 이 영화는 도쿄 시부야의 공공화장실 청소부인 중년 남성 히라야마의 단조롭고 반복적인 행위를 포착한다. 특별한 사건 없이 그의 일상에 나타난 감각과 정서를 깊이 있게 재현한 이 작품은 공간 이미지와 사물 이미지의 특정한 배열을 통해 물질적 의미작용을 시각화한다. 이에 본 연구는 <퍼펙트 데이즈>의 공간 이미지와 사물 이미지를 분석하기 위하여, 양자에 나타난 물질성이 어떻게 삶의 존재론적 깊이와 감정적 밀도를 재현하는지 살펴본다. 이를 통해 시각 이미지가 물질성을 획득하면서 그 의미를 생성하고, 관객에게 감각적인 경험을 제공하는지 밝히고자 한다. 영화 <퍼펙트 데이즈>는 일상의 아름다움을 재발견하고, 평범한 존재의 존엄성을 옹호하며, 느림과 깊이의 가치를 회복하려는 미학적 실천이라 할 만하다. 이는 속도와 효율성을 최고 가치로 여기는 현대 사회에 던지는 중요한 메시지이며, 삶에 대한 깊이 있는 사유와 성찰을 가능케 하는 예술 형식임을 확인시켜 준다. 따라서 본 연구를 통해 사회적 리얼리즘 영화뿐 아니라, 다양한 장르의 영화가 실천적 예술로 기능함을 증명하는 후속 연구로 이어질 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
This study explores the materiality and signification of spatial and object imagery in Perfect Days (2023), directed by Wim Wenders, which constitute the primary visual elements of the film. The film portrays the monotonous and repetitive daily life of Hirayama, a middle-aged man who works as a public toilet cleaner in Shibuya, Tokyo. Without any dramatic incidents, the film deeply captures the sensations and emotions that emerge within his daily routine. Through minimalist mise-en-scène, a restrained narrative, silence and repetition, and the arrangement of spatial and object images, the film visualizes material signification. Accordingly, this study analyzes Perfect Days by focusing on two main axes: spatial imagery and object imagery. Specifically, it examines how the materiality of these images represents the ontological depth and emotional density of life. Through this, the study aims to reveal how visual imagery acquires materiality, generates meaning, and offers viewers a sensory experience. Perfect Days can be regarded as an aesthetic practice that rediscovers the beauty of the everyday, affirms the dignity of ordinary existence, and restores the value of slowness and depth. This serves as an important message to contemporary society, which prioritizes speed and efficiency above all, and affirms the role of cinema as an art form that enables deep contemplation and reflection on life. Therefore, this study may lead to further research that demonstrates how not only socially realist films, but also a wide range of film genres, can function as forms of practical art.
