웹툰 산업은 인공지능의 발전과 함께 창작 방식에 혁신을 맞이하고 있다. 생성형 AI는 웹툰 시나리오 작성부터 작화 보조, 스타일 변환, 다국어 번역까지 웹툰 제작 전 과정에서 활용되어 창작 효율을 높이고 있다. 동시에 AI(Artificial Intelligence)가 유명 작가의 화풍(스타일)을 무단 학습하거나, 생성물에 기존 작품을 모방한 요소가 나타나면서 저작권논란이 커지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 웹툰 제작을 지원하는 생성형 AI 기술 현황과 이에 따른 저작권 보호 방안을 고찰한다. 특히 온디바이스(on-device)환경에서 AI를 활용하는 방안을 모색하여, 창작자의 데이터가 외부로 유출되지 않으면서도 AI 도구를 안전하게 활용할 수 있는 기술들을 분석한다. 이를 통해 웹툰 분야에서 생성형 AI를 창작도구로 적극 활용하면서도 창작자 권리를 보호할 수 있는 기술적·제도적 방향을 제시하고자 한다.
Abstract
The webtoon industry is undergoing innovation in creation methods with the advancement of AI. Generative AIis being utilized throughout the webtoon production pipeline – from scenario writing and drawing assistance to style transfer and multi-language translation – thereby improving creative efficiency. At the same time, as AI models learn artists’ distinctive styleswithout permission and generate content resembling existing works, copyrightcontroversies have intensified. This study examines the current state of generative AI technologies supporting webtoon creation and explores corresponding copyright protection measures. In particular, it investigates the use of AI in an on-deviceenvironment, whereby creators can safely use AI tools without their data leaving their device. Through this, we suggest technical and policy directions that enable generative AI to be used as a creative assistant in webtoons while safeguarding creator rights.
