초록

The TV series Pachinko, an adaptation of the novel by Korean American writer Min Jin Lee, expands on its source material by introducing new historical episodes, a different sequencing of events, and interviews with actual Zainichi women, which were not included in the novel. The adaptation also meticulously translates the English dialogue in the original novel into different dialects in Korean and Japanese. These changes in the TV adaptation are evidence of the production’s effort to go beyond a standard TV adaptation of a literary text and strive to portray Korean history faithfully and accurately for a global audience. This paper elucidates how the adaptation’s candid approach to Korean history provides social acknowledgment and emotional compensation for the country’s painful history. Furthermore, through analysis of how this series differs from typical Korean historical dramas that tend to place the blame for Korea’s tragic history solely on Japan, I argue that Pachinko’s unique depiction of the era and its people expands the scope of Korean historical dramas by introducing nuanced representations of its Japanese characters and topics of contemporary relevance such as immigrant identity.
