초록
This study examines why the East German military did not intervene during the peaceful revolution of 1989. It focuses on two key factors: the politicization of the military and the lack of self-organization. Based on this analysis, the study also explores how the North Korean military might behave in a similar crisis and what this could mean. The main argument is that in authoritarian regimes, when the military is too politicized, it may respond quickly to protect the regime. However, this also weakens the military's ability to act independently and adapt to changing situations. As a result, the military may withdraw from its role in supporting the regime. In the East German case, excessive politicization helped push the military away from political responsibility during the crisis. The study suggests that, under similar conditions, the North Korean military could also shift from defending the regime to becoming a divided and unstable force.
