Abstract

This study is a literary inquiry into the internal logic of the Book of Joshua. Based on both Peter Brook and L. Daniel Hawk's literary-psychological study, the present paper employs the concept of desire as a primary metaphor for understanding the operation of plot in the book of Joshua. Yahweh's promise to give Israel the land of Canaan may be viewed as a manifestation of textual desire. Its reading of the book of Joshua focuses on the contest of two major plots: Whereas the "ostensive plots" composed of obedience and integrity tend to orient the story of the book of Joshua in the direction of fulfillment, the "opposing plots" composed of disobedience and fragmentation, tend to hinder the movement toward fulfillment. This paper explores the interplays of the contesting plots which may seem to fulfill or frustrate the textual desire in 24:14-28 by beginning to raise a few questions. "Does the ending bring a sense of completion and closure? Has a resolution of the major tensions been achieved?" The present study demonstrates that the confrontation of Joshua with Israel, who affirms her allegiance and integrity before Yahweh, renders powerful obstructions which challenge the promise of fulfillment and threaten hopes for a satisfactory conclusion. Whereas 24:14-28 offers a formal closure, nonetheless, on a deeper level, it leaves much of the story in suspension in terms of the fulfillment of the land promise. This suspension permeates through the whole Deuteronomistic literature from Joshua to 2 Kings until the expulsion of Israel from the promised land.
