Abstract

There have been debates over how much Eastern geographic knowledge influenced changes in European geographic and cartographic knowledge during the late medieval period. Most scholars agree that the richest geographical information about Asia including China was introduced to medieval Europeans by the travel account of Marco Polo. As copies of the original and subsequent versions in various languages began to circulate in different parts of Europe, this information gradually circulated and, as it did so, influenced geographic and cartographic works there. As a consequence, the content of Polo’s account came to be incorporated into several innovative European maps, with Islamic cartographic elements, that first appeared in the late thirteenth century. Of these, the map that contains the richest information about Asia is the Fra Mauro map. The present paper analyzes the information about China in the Fra Mauro map using the most recent studies and suggests that the Fra Mauro map indeed contributed to changing Europeans’ understanding of Asia with the active use of much richer and more realistic information about various places in China drawn from Polo and other contemporaneous accounts, and that the map also reveals a limited stage of European knowledge about the East because the Fra Mauro map’s maker incorporated some outdated information from classical sources, including Ptolemy, into the map. In addition to pointing out the most important features, the paper also considers what further tasks should be done to explore significance of transfers of geographical knowledge through Eurasian connections in the late medieval period. An important source for a more in-depth analysis in comparison to Polo is Islamic geographical sources, which, according to some recent studies, could have gradually influenced European geographical works in the late medieval period.
