Transmission of External Knowledge into East Asia via Arabs: A Comparison of Medieval Arabic Accounts of Ceylon and Fayyum with Those in the Zhufan zhi

This article investigates medieval knowledge exchange between the Arab world and East Asia by comparing Arabic descriptions of South Asia and Africa with corresponding passages in East Asian texts. Centering on Zhao Rushi’s Zhufan zhi—compiled in Song-dynasty China—the study extracts its distinctive notions of Sri Lanka and Egypt’s Fayyūm and compares them with several medieval Arabic manuscripts that potentially informed those perceptions. The analysis reveals, first, that a substantial portion of East Asia’s knowledge of the wider world came from information transmitted by the Arabs with whom Zhao interacted and, second, that East Asian compilers selectively reshaped this material to fit their own interpretive criteria. Future expanded research should convey this methodology to additional case studies in order to construct a three-dimensional network map of knowledge exchange of the East and the West.
