이 논문에서는 <유씨삼대록> 진양공주의 인물형상을 재검토해 보고자 했다. 특히 진양공주와 관련된 서술의 질적·양적 특징을 분석하여 이 작품이 진양공주를 형상화하는 방식 면에서 어떤 전략을 취하고 있는지 살피고, 이를 통해 진양공주의 인물형상의 의미에 대해 새롭게 논의해 보고자 했다. <유씨삼대록> 전반부에 펼쳐지는 유세형과 진양공주, 장혜앵을 둘러싼 일련의 사건에서 진양공주의 감정과 내면에 대한 서술은 다른 인물에 비해 상당히 제한되어 있다. 따라서 진양공주는 그간 논의된 것처럼 어떤 상황에서도 태연자약한, 화평함을 잃지 않는 인물이라기보다는 감정 자체가 상당히 축소·생략되어 있다고 보는 편이 타당하다고 보았다. 이러한 서술자의 전략은 진양공주가 처한 구체적인 상황과 거기에 대응하여 일어나는 미묘한 감정 반응보다는 그의 생득적인 본질, 즉 본성을 강조하는 방식으로 구체화되어 나타난다. 그러나 이러한 서술자의 전략에도 불구하고 진양공주의 감정은 작품에 균열을 일으키며 새어나온다. 그리고 그렇게 포착된 진양공주의 감정이나 행동 방식은 당대의 규범과 거리가 있다고 여겨지는 면이 있다. 따라서 작품 내외에서 진양공주를 완벽하고도 규범적인 여성으로 기억하게 되는 것은 서술자가 그러한 인식과 해석의 틀을 반복적으로 제시하고 있는 점과 관련이 깊을 것이라고 보았다. 한편 이러한 서술자의 전략이 문제가 되는 까닭은 진양공주의 내면을 얼마간 왜소하고도 평면적으로 만드는 결과를 초래했을 뿐만 아니라, 그가 일상적인 삶의 국면들에서 느꼈을 법한 고통과 아픔들을 과소평가하는 결과로 이어졌기 때문이라고 보았다. 그러나 바로 이러한 전략 덕분에 진양공주가 당대 규범으로부터 일정하게 일탈하고 있는 면모 또한 문제가 되지 않는다는 점에서, 진양공주에 대한 서술자의 전략은 양가적인 의미를 지닌다고 보았다. 더불어 진양공주의 죽음 이후 그의 자리를 대체하는 장혜앵과의 비교를 통해, 진양공주가 삶의 기준을 스스로의 판단과 감정에 두고 있는 점에 주목하였다. 그 결과 진양공주의 인물형상은 오히려 그가 일찍 죽어 퇴장하게 되면서 장혜앵처럼 가부장제적 이념에 완벽하게 길들여지지 않았다는 데서 그 의미를 찾을 수 있을 것으로 결론지었다.
Abstract
The aim of this paper is to reexamine the characterization of Princess Jinyang in Yussisamdaerok. Compared to other characters in the work, descriptions of Jinyang’s emotions and inner world are notably limited. Therefore, it would be inaccurate to assume that Jinyang is inherently calm and composed at all times. Rather, it seems that the narrative simply does not place much emphasis on her emotional state. The narrator’s approach is to highlight the significance of her noble nature, rather than focusing on the specific circumstances Jinyang faces or her emotional responses to them. However, despite the narrator’s intentions, Jinyang's emotions leak out and creating fissures within the narrative. From a Confucian perspective, the emotions and behaviors displayed by Jinyang in these moments are far from the idealized image of women. If so, it is presumed that the narrator’s repeated suggestion of this framework of perception and interpretation was closely related to remembering Jinyang as a normative woman. However, the fact that the princess’s life continually diverged from societal norms as a result of these strategies is not inherently problematic in the work. In this regard, the narrative strategy employed in Yussisamdaerok carries an ambivalent significance. In contrast to Jang Hye-aeng, who successfully assumed her position following the princess’s death, Princess Jinyang led her life according to her own judgments and emotions, rather than conforming to patriarchal ideology. Consequently, Princess Jinyang was never fully assimilated into the patriarchal order because of her untimely death.
