Abstract
The purpose of the present study is to examine the universalities and particularities of 13 Korean versions of “AT 706 The Maiden without Hands” by comparing with its 17 celtic versions from Ireland, Scotland, and Brittany. The common contents between the Korean and Celtic versions can be summed up as follows: (1) The heroine’s father (brother) marries a wicked woman; (2) The wicked woman accuses the girl of having an abortion or killing her baby brother; (3) Her father (brother) multilates her hands; (4) A man finds her in the tree or in the woods and marries her; (5) She gives birth to a baby (babies); (6) By a miracle she gets her hands back again in the fountain; (7) The wicked woman is severly punished. Among these narrative contents, the child motif is the most important because the child motif integrates the other major motifs into a storyline and the child, from a psychological perspective, can be interpreted as “a symbol which unites the opposites, a mediator, bringer of healing, that is, one who makes whole,” to borrow Jung’s remarks. The particular motifs of the Korean versions are “the ascension of the mutilated hands” and “weaver.” These two motifs can be considered to derive from the collective unconscious of the Korean woman and the characteristics of the Korean culture. In Korean folk ballads, Korean weavers have often imagined themselves as heavenly maidens and such Korean goddesses as Seonyǒ and the Great Mother of the Sacred Peach Mountain are cosmic weavers who can cross between earth and heaven. The particular motifs of the Celtic versions are oath, infanticide, breast mutilation, thorn, dog as helpful animal, and unchristened child. These motifs seem to derive from the Celtic culture, religion, and customs.
