Abstract
The purpose of the present study is to comprehend the universality and particularity of the Korean Halfling(half-man) tale by comparing it with its foreign counterparts. The present study has analyzed 16 orally transmitted versions of it and discovered four major common motifs inherent in them: (1) miraculous birth from vegetable or fruit, (2) conflicts between siblings, (3) killing human-eating monsters, (4) marriage by bride-theft. Focusing on these four major motifs, I have tried to put the Korean halfling tale into a global context of folk-narrative literature. The Aarne-Thompson tale typology does not correspond properly with the narrative structure of the Korean halfling tale. However, the Korean halfling tale shows some elements of AT327B (The Dwarf and the Giant), AT675 (The Lazy Boy), and AT1525 (The Master Thief). In particular, the Korean halfling tale is very similar to the AT327B tales collected from such areas as Punjab, Iran, Palestine, and North Africa. The 11 versions which have be passed down for a long period of time in those Islamic areas have much in common with the oral versions of the Korean halfling tale in that they contain the motif of miraculous birth from fruit, the motif of the wicked brothers, and the motif of killing human-eating monsters. However, in its foreign counterparts, the motif of marriage by bride-theft is not common and the halfling does not kill the cannibal monster(s) by his superhuman strength but by his clever conceit. As a result of the present comparative study, it can be said that the global universality of the Korean halfling tale can be seen in the three motifs: (1) miraculous birth from fruit, (2) the persecution of the wicked brothers (3) killing human-eating monster (ogre or tiger). The particularities of the Korean halfling tale can be described as the following three characteristics: (1) superhuman power of the Korean halfling, (2) resemblance between the Korean folk drama and the grotesque act of the halfling's bride-theft (3) its special emphasis on the marriage of the halfling (the harmony of Yin and Yang).
