Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of temperament and maternal parenting on preschoolers’ executive function. The subjects of this study were 508 preschoolers who were 5 years of age attending the day care center or kindergarten in Seoul and Gyeonggi area were selected. Mothers reported on temperament, executive function, and parenting behaviors. The results of this study summarized as follows. First, executive function of girls was higher than that of boys. Second, ‘adaptability’, ‘physiological regularity’ and ‘responsiveness’ predicted executive function positively, but ‘activity’ predicted it negatively. ‘physiological regularity’ was a predictors of execution function in girls only. Third, ‘reasonable guidance’ and ‘parent involvement’ predicted executive function positively, whereas ‘responsiveness’ predicted executive function negatively in boys only. Fourth, as a result of examining the relative influence of the temperament and the maternal parenting, ‘parent involvement’ was the strongest predictor of executive function in boys, whereas ‘reasonable guidance’ was the strongest predictor of executive function in girls.
