Abstract
Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) in special education seeks to enhance outcomes through scientific evidence but faces methodological, axiological, and epistemological challenges. Methodologically, EBP’s reliance on randomized controlled trials (RCTs) oversimplifies complex educational contexts, struggles with diverse student needs, and focuses on short-term results, limiting external validity and long-term impact. Axiologically, EBP’s empirical focus may conflict with values like inclusion and autonomy, as seen in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), which can neglect self-determination, especially in non-Western contexts like Korea, where Confucian values and resource constraints challenge Western EBP models. Epistemologically, evidence’s objectivity is questioned due to varying researcher assumptions and cultural contexts, reducing applicability across settings. To address these, an integrative paradigm is proposed: Mixed Methods Research (MMR) balances quantitative data (e.g., ABA metrics) with qualitative insights (e.g., teacher feedback). Expanded Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) ensure interventions align with inclusion and cultural relevance. Complexity theory views special education as a dynamic system, promoting adaptive evidence. Teacher-researcher networks, like Korea’s SETUP group, integrate scientific and practical knowledge for context-responsive evidence. This approach harmonizes evidence, values, and expertise, prioritizing students’ individuality, diversity, and ethical balance.
