Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze "anti-fascism" that appears in "personal narratives". The target here is Walter Bartel who was a member of the German Communist Party (Kommunistische Partei in Deutschland, KPD) and taken to Buchenwald concentration camp. KZ-Buchenwald, built in Thuringia in 1937, was one of the largest camps in Germany at the time. The camp was liberated by the prisoners themselves and the American army that advanced to the vicinity of the camp on April 11, 1945. The prisoner initiated to organize an armed uprising and broke up Buchenwald. After the liberation, they controlled Buchenwald with the American army. In 1945, when the war ended in Germany, people had to work on reconstruction with a little hope in despair. The history of Buchenwald told by prisoners such as Bartel at this time, especially the story of prisoner's self-liberation, became part of the founding myth in the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) after the development of the Cold War and the establishment of "Two Germanies". The reunification of East and West Germany encourage to review this “anti-fascism” story, but now it is necessary to consider such a review itself. This article focuses on the historical process until “anti-fascism” was reconstructed, and analyzes narrative of “anti-fascism” told by Bartel.
